Wind Elements in Your Garden

Embrace the whispers of wind energy by adding sound and movement in your garden. Elements that amplify the sounds and signs of wind, such as tuned metal or bamboo wind chimes and long, flowing plant tendrils, are a great way to provide positive energy in your garden.

If you like a lively garden, wind provides you with a number of possibilities. The key to working with wind energy in a garden is restraint. Fly two windsocks, five bamboo wind chimes and a couple of mobiles in your garden and the effect will not be energizing but sensually exhausting. You want the wind elements to be noticed, but you don't want them to take the attention away from other things in your garden.

Wind Chimes and the Wind Element

Wind tones from wind chimes are said to have a healing effect on our bodies. They calm our minds and awaken our spirits. The resonance and vibration of sound releases stress and emotional blockages in the body and calms the mind.

Large wind chimes can dominate a small garden, particularly if the wind gets rough. In these cases, smaller scale wind chimes are definitely best. Besides the melodic rings of wind chimes, the soft click of bamboo wind chimes can be particularly soothing. You can also sometimes find glass wind chimes that produce attractive tinkling sounds.

Wind as a Secondary Attraction
The wind elements in your garden should be present and noticed, but should not dominate the garden. The chatter of wind chimes, the brush of the breeze on your face and even the rustling of the plants as it passes by are noticed by the careful observer, but don't distract you from conversations or wake you if you're napping.

Visible Wind

For graceful, flowing movements in your garden, try hanging plants that drip long tendrils, or slender, drooping grasses that bend or sway in the wind. Large trees such as weeping willows can provide the same effects. Although the effect lasts only a short time, a tree such as a cottonwood can shed white petals and mimic the gentle drift of snowflakes.

Almost any hanging object that rocks or sways in the wind can incorporate wind energy. For example, if you have children, hanging a swing from a tree branch and watch their delight as they glide through the air.

If children regularly visit your energized garden, pinwheels and whirligigs are another option, as they're very popular with little ones. Both the ornaments and the children will release energy as they brighten your garden.
